South Africa’s pet project of an international T20 league, in the form of the T20 Global League, has successfully added a new feather to its hat, with one of its franchises having undertaken by Bollywood actress, Preity Zinta. The team, which had previously been christened ‘Stellenbosch Monarchs’, has undergone a rapid makeover in terms of the franchise name as well as the official logo. The team will now be known as the ‘Stellenbosch Kings’.

The team will now be known as the ‘Stellenbosch Kings’. Zinta is not new to the cricketing world as she already owns the Kings XI Punjab franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Stellenbosch team marks her second venture in the genre of T20 leagues. The T20 Global League is slated to begin on November, 3.

Preity renames her newly acquired team

The Stellenbosch Monarchs had been thrown into rough waters when their initial owner had backed out abruptly. Businessman Mushtaq Brey, who’s the co-founder and Chief Executive at Brimstone Investment Corporation Limited, a South African investment company had been first roped in as the owner of the franchise. However, Brey opted out of the tournament at the last moment, raising questions as to who would shoulder the responsibilities of owning the team. It was then that Zinta chose to buy the franchise and ink her name onto the proceedings of the star-studded international tournament.

After having bought the claims to the team, Zinta chose to rename the team as ‘Stellenbosch Kings’, keeping in sync with the team’s IPL counterpart, King XI Punjab. The logo also underwent a sea-change from the blue mountains in the background to a roaring lion on the forefront, once again corroborating with the logo of the actor’s IPL team.

The official Twitter account of the team welcomed Zinta on board and also released the new name and logo in subsequent tweets. The team is most likely to see Protean heavyweight, Faf du Plessis as the skipper while Stephen Fleming will serve as the coach.
